Dupont Circle Is Our Home

We live here too

We love to share the experience.

Dupont Circle is named after the historic district and the circular public space, which dates back to the 1870s when the Army Corps of Engineers commenced work on what was known as Pacific Circle.

A bronze statue was erected in the circle in 1884 to honor Rear Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont's service in the Civil War.

The neighborhood's now iconic white marble fountain replaced the statue in 1921.

The DuPont name, however, stuck.

The neighborhood's boundaries stretch from Swan Street south to Rhode Island Avenue, M, and N streets. Its borders extend from the 16th Street Historic District in the east to Florida Avenue in the west.

Despite the changes through the years, Dupont Circle endures as one of the capital's most culturally significant neighborhoods.

Connecticut Avenue provides a nearly endless supply of shops. That means few needs or wants that can't be met within a few blocks. There's also a host of renowned businesses like Kramerbooks, which Visit DC includes on its list of top places to shop while in town.

It's not hard to find a little peace.

Although it's located in the heart of one of America's great cities, Dupont Circle holds an abundance of quiet secluded escapes, such as the famed Spanish Steps, allowing for easy retreats from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Like Washington, DC itself, Dupont's chock full of history.

Dating back to 1791, according to the DC Historic Preservation Office, Washington DC's designer, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, envisioned this section of the city as a residential area "around a major circular element intersected by three grand avenues named... Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire."

Historic sites in the neighborhood include the Heurich House Museum, a/k/a the Brewmaster's Castle, home to DC's first brewmaster Christian Heurich.  There's also the Anderson House, which as home to the Society of Cincinnati, allows visitors to check out Revolutionary War-era books and maps in its archives.
